It is often known as a ”strawberry mole” because of its bright red color. Hemangiomas occur in approximately 5–10% of % children.

1. Stages of development of hemangioma

Hemangioma is characterized by a clear life cycle:

Appearance: It usually appears at a few weeks of age (sometimes it is already visible at birth).

Growth phase (proliferation): During the first year of life, hemangioma often grows rapidly.

Shrinkage phase (involution): After the growth phase, the hemangioma slowly begins to shrink and lighten. This phase can last for several years, sometimes up to 12 years of age.

2. When does a hemangioma require treatment?

More than 90% of % hemangiomas are harmless and do not require any treatment – they will disappear on their own over time. However, a doctor's evaluation and treatment is necessary if the hemangioma is located in an area that may interfere with the child's normal development:

Eye area: A hemangioma can press on the eye or obscure the visual axis, compromising vision development.

Respiratory tract: Hemangiomas of the larynx or ”beard area” can cause breathing difficulties.

Wounding: If the surface of a hemangioma breaks, it can be painful and prone to infection.

Major cosmetic defect: Especially large changes in the facial area.

3. Treatment options

If treatment is deemed necessary, there are several options:

Beta-blocker (Propranolol): Currently the primary treatment. It is an oral medication that stops growth and causes the hemangioma to shrink rapidly. Treatment is often started with hospital monitoring.

Laser treatment: Used especially in the treatment of ulcerated hemangiomas to accelerate healing or lighten remaining blood vessels.

Surgical treatment: It is usually only considered later if the hemangioma causes significant cosmetic damage or if drug treatment is ineffective for a tumor in a dangerous location.

Corticosteroids: Nowadays, it is only rarely used in special cases.

4. Monitoring at home

Photography: The best way to monitor the development of a hemangioma is to take regular photographs of it from the same distance (e.g. once a month). This will make it easy to notice changes in size and color.

Protection: Avoid rubbing the hemangioma. If the surface is broken, clean it with a spray and protect it with ointment or a wound dressing if necessary, as directed by your doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

Contact a doctor if:

Hemangioma grows very quickly.

It is located near the eye, nose, mouth, or genitals.

The surface of the hemangioma becomes ulcerated or begins to bleed.

The child has multiple (five or more) hemangiomas in different parts of the body (in this case, internal organs, such as the liver, are examined).

Duodecim article

https://www.duodecimlehti.fi/duo10471

Lapsen hemangiooma (mansikkaluomi) – Ohje vanhemmille Hemangiooma on imeväisiän yleisin hyvänlaatuinen verisuonikasvain.
